Chemotherapy...
Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment. Systemic means it affects the whole body as it travels through the bloodstream. The goal chemotherapy and other systemic treatments is to destroy cancer cells that may have spread from where the cancer started to another part of the body. Chemotherapy is effective against cancer cells because the medicines used interfere with the growth of rapidly dividing cells.
Physicians who specialize in the treatment of cancer are called Onclogists. Some of the most skilled and experienced oncologists in the United States practice here in central Oregon.
Some chemotherapy treatments are
appropriate for home infusion while others are suitable for
infusion in our ambulatory infusion center. Your
physician, in concert with our clinical pharmacists, determine
the best care setting based on lifestyle, the type of
medication, length of the infusion, and dose cycle.
These factors also determine the most appropriate method for chemotherapy infusion. Ambulatory electronic pumps, stationary, pole-mounted pumps and simple gravity (drip) infusion methods are used to administer chemotherapy.
