Hydration...hydration1.jpg

Hydration infusion therapy provides critical fluids and electrolytes to persons suffering severe dehydration.  Severe dehydration can be caused by several events.

  • frequent vomiting from illness or during pregnancy
  • insufficient fluid intake when suffering from the flu or flu-like illnesses.  The elderly are especially suseptible to this.
  • severe dehydration from strenuous athlectic activity - especially on very warm days.
  • normal physicial responses to medications such as chemotherapy drugs

Stable patients can receive physician prescribed hydration infusion therapy in their homes.  Patients treated at home typically recover faster and enjoy a better quality of life during recovery.

The prescribing physician works with our clinical pharmacist to determine whether an ambulatory or stationary infusion pump or gravity drip infusion is appropriate.  The physician and pharmacist decide the amount and type of fluid formula and, if appropriate,  what electrolytes to add to the fluid.
